I'm having a strange problem with contact dashboards. I have a Drupal site with a bunch of users who essentially only have permission to register for events, make contributions and see their contact dashboards. But many of them cannot see the link to their contact dashboard, or many of the fields in their "name and address" settings (in fact, trying to edit "name and address" just redirects them to the front page).

If that user visits /civicrm, they get an access denied error (as they should)... but from then on,  they DO see the link to their contact dashboard and all relevant fields on their user page.

I think I've traced the problem to the call to CRM_Contact_BAO_Contact_Permission::allow( $userID ) in civicrm.module's implementation of hook_user. But I haven't been able to figure out a fix.
