what is changing if i use civicrm on joomla 1.5 in legacy mode or not?

CiviCRM v2.0.5 does not work without legacy mode on Joomla 1.5.

CiviCRM v2.1.x will work without legacy mode on Joomla 1.5. All the added functionality is between the versions.
