APC Condemns Makinde’s Comments, Accuses Oyo Governor Of Inciting Violence

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned remarks made by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde at an opposition summit in Ibadan, accusing him of invoking the violent history of “Operation Wetie” to incite unrest over claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described Makinde’s comments as reckless and a threat to peace and national security.

The APC said it was disturbing that a sitting governor and chief security officer of his state would reference “one of the darkest episodes of political violence in Nigeria’s history” while addressing a political gathering.

“Makinde’s violent rhetoric cannot be dismissed as mere opposition posturing,” the party said.

“His statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability.”

The party called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to protect lives, property and Nigeria’s democratic order.

It also said constitutional immunity from prosecution does not shield public office holders from accountability over threats to national security.

The APC also dismiss allegations that the country is sliding into one-party rule, insisting Nigeria’s democratic space remains open and competitive, with nearly two dozen registered political parties.
