Ogun Killing Was Cult Clash, Not Linked To Yayi Rally — Police
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed a violent cult-related clash in Abeokuta that left one person dead on Sunday, and says investigations have begun to track down those responsible.
In a Sunday statement issued by the State command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, detectives of the Oke Itoku Division said the incident occurred around 2:45 pm along Wasimi Ake Road, within the Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank axis leading towards Ijemo Agbadu.
The Command stressed that the violence was not connected to any political gathering or public event in the area.
“The Ogun State Police Command unequivocally clarifies that this incident did not occur at Ake Palace, did not take place within the venue of the rally, and is in no way connected to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration programme held at Ake Palace,” the statement said.
Preliminary police findings indicated that suspected rival cult groups engaged in a gun duel before fleeing into adjoining streets, triggering panic among residents.
Police operatives who responded to distress calls said they met the aftermath of the clash at the scene.
“The statement read, ‘Upon arrival, operatives found one victim, identified simply as “Stone,” lying in a pool of his blood with critical gunshot injuries,’” the Command stated.
It was stated that the victim was immediately evacuated with the support of the State Ambulance Service to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Babaseyi said normalcy has since been restored to the area, with additional security deployment to prevent a recurrence.
“The Command has launched an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators and is actively pursuing credible leads to ensure their swift arrest and prosecution,” the statement added.
Residents were urged to remain calm but vigilant, while the Command encouraged members of the public to provide useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
